#BGREVIEWER: Jesus Christ Superstar
Well, hello there. I’m Liz from FM96 and I am excited to be back as your Bud Gardens Reviewer. ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ has been on my bucket list for a long time, and I was thrilled to see it as part of Broadway in London this season.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical is celebrating its50th anniversary which is a massive milestone. If you are unfamiliar with the story, it follows the character Jesus Christ during his final days before his crucifixion with a real focus on his strained relationship with his disciple Judas. It’s not only a show that appeals to musical theatre fans but also people who love a good rock concert. ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ is the definition of a Rock Opera as the cast perform directly to the crowd and use handheld mics just like a rockstar.
The music is iconic, and this cast has powerhouse vocals needed to perform it. A few words that come to mind for their performances are thunderous and commanding. The set, props, costumes, and choreography are all visually mesmerizing and help transport you to another time yet simultaneously keep it feeling modern.
It’s hard to believe that when Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were pitching this rock opera to producers those many decades ago it was considered, ‘the worst idea in history.” 10/10. Highly Recommend. Loved it.
Thank you, Broadway in London, for bringing these incredible shows to our city!
